Messi is Not For Sale

Barcelona president Joan Laporta has insisted that Argentine forward Lionel Messi is not for sale at any price.

Manchester City and Chelsea have been linked with world record bids for the Camp Nou favourite in the summer, but Barca will not consider any offer.

Messi's performances this season have cemented his reputation as one of the world's finest players and Laporta feels such accolades are a testimony to the club's policy of nurturing young talent.

The 21-year-old, like Kaka at Milan, has repeatedly expressed contentment with his present employers and it would appear a parting of ways is highly unlikely in the foreseeable future.

"Messi is not for sale and that's it," said Laporta. "It's not a question of money. For me he's the best player in the world and he feels comfortable at Barcelona.

"For us, Messi reflects Barca in a perfect way that makes young players see how we develop talent.

"Leo Messi came to Barca when he was 12 years old. He has a natural talent but we created the player you know and we are very proud of this.

"I think Leo is very happy in our city and in our country and so is his family."

Meanwhile, it has been reported that Barcelona have reached an initial agreement to sign Keirrison from Palmeiras.

An outline agreement has apparently been reached, although Barcelona have yet to put forward a bid; with a price of €15m believed to be enough to seal his signature.

The 20-year-old forward has already said that he wants to be successful and would relish a move to the Camp Nou.

"I would really like to play alongside Lionel Messi," Sport quote Keirrison as stating. "He is the best player in the world. Since I was very young I have wanted to play with a great club and, although I have nothing against any others, I have always identified with Barcelona.

"I saw a lot of games when Romario and Ronaldo were there and that made me dream that one day I would play at Barcelona.

Jose Mourinho: Bringing through young talent

Inter Milan boss Jose Mourinho has thrown his backing behind FIFA's controversial "6+5" rule, designed to limit the number of foreign players in domestic leagues, and insists that focusing on home-grown players is the right path to take.

Sepp Blatter's contentious proposal, which has the backing of 155 of FIFA's 208 member nations, states that at the start of a game a club must field at least six players who would be eligible for the national team of the country of the club.

In an interview with ESPN Mourinho said: "The sentiment I think is correct. I'm not concerned about the exact number, 3+3 or 4+4 or 5+5, that's not the point. But the philosophy of teams to look to youth policy and youth development, I think the philosophy is correct, yes."

Serie A side Internazionale famously has very few Italians at the club and this is something that Mourinho has started to address. The Portuguese had too many non-Italian players for his European squad at the start of the season and had to leave five players out of the Champions League list.

As a consequence he brought through two of the club's Italian youngsters, Davide Santon and Mario Balotelli, and Mourinho points out it is important for the fans to have local idols to identify with.

"You know, the world is global, football is global, we cannot be too much concerned about nationalities, but I think the clubs, they must invest in their formation, in players made in the club, made in the country," Mourinho said. "I think this is also about the empathy between the team and the fans."

"In this moment you can see San Siro full of people with Santon shirts. Four months ago they didn't even know Santon was at Inter Milan. In this moment they go to the stadium and wear his shirts - why?

"Because he's Italian, because he's made at Inter, because he's a young boy, because he's a boy who can play at Inter for the next 10, 15 years. So people can create a better relation with the team when they feel the nationality is there."

But despite openly backing FIFA's idea of promoting local talent, Mourinho believes it is not something that can be imposed right away.

"We cannot do it with a finger click," the former Chelsea boss said. "I think most of the teams, they are not ready to give an immediate answer to this kind of demands, it must be step by step."

"The clubs, they cannot feel a little bit of pressure to change direction and approach this philosophy, but is completely possible to do this in the next years."

The "6+5" rule proposed by FIFA last month has met with some tough resistance, not least from the European Commission, who argue that it would amount to discrimination in the workplace and a restriction on the free movement of workers.

WORLD CUP QUALIFIER

NETHERLANDS V SCOTLAND
Venue: Amsterdam ArenA Date: Saturday, 28 March Kick-off: 1945 GMT
Coverage: Full commentary on BBC Radio 5 Live, BBC Radio Scotland and online, live text commentary online and live commentary on BBC Radio nan Gaideal. Live on Setanta Sports 1, with highlights on Sportscene on BBC ONE Scotland at 2220 GMT. Online highlights on BBC Sport site.

The Scotland manager guided Ipswich to fifth place in the Premier League in 2001, and is also credited with revitalising Derby and Southampton.

However, he insists a World Cup qualifying win in Amsterdam would trump anything he has achieved before.

"This will be the biggest achievement of my career," said Burley. "But we believe we can do it."

Burley is also looking forward to having captain Barry Ferguson fit for the match against the Dutch.

The Scotland captain was missing for the defeat in Macedonia, victory over Iceland and a draw with Norway.

"Getting Barry back into the midfield for the first time in a World Cup game for me is essential," said Burley.

"I'm so pleased he is available as I feel that Barry, Scott Brown and Darren Fletcher can match anyone."

Scotland go into the Group 9 game with a depleted squad and trail the group favourites by five points.

But, speaking before the match, Burley insisted: "We are not daft, we are realists, they will have a lot of possession and we have to shut them down and try to impose ourselves when we can.

"If we do that, I am confident we can nick a point, maybe more."
"As far as the players are concerned, there has been no negativity at all.

"We are looking forward to it. It doesn't get any bigger than coming to Amsterdam to play a team that is top six in the world.

"It's a challenge that the players and myself are up for. We will give it our best shot and see where it takes us."

Burley also paid tribute to the Tartan Army, around 15,000 of whom have converged on Amsterdam to add their usual raucous support.

"I do value the support of the Tartan Army - they are legends," he added.

"They are great to have on your side, especially when you do not have the squad you would like because of injuries.

Can Scotland match the Netherlands in midfield?

"The Dutch people love them coming here, they are so fanatical, they support their team and they behave very well.

"Wherever they go in the world, people respect them and it's great for the players.

"A lot of them might not have tickets for the game but they have come to support their country and that's what it's all about.

There are big opportunities at Chelsea

Striker Didier Drogba is willing to discuss a contract extension with Chelsea. The 30-year-old's fortunes have improved dramatically under interim coach Guus Hiddink.

The Ivory Coast international was an outcast under former boss Luiz Felipe Scolari but the frontman has been revitalised since Hiddink agreed to take charge until the summer.

Drogba's current contract expires at the end of next season. There was widespread speculation linking him with a move to Real Madrid in the January transfer window, but the player's advisor now insists his client is ready to stay at Stamford Bridge.

Thierno Seydi claims Drogba is prepared to reject a host of big-money offers from across Europe in order to remain with the Blues.

He believes the striker has rediscovered his form and passion for the club and is now ready to complete a remarkable u-turn by pledging his future to them.

And, to put off any potential pre-season suitors, he would like to open talks about a new deal as soon as possible - providing Chelsea are interested in keeping him.

"There are big opportunities at Chelsea," said Seydi. "He is happy, playing well and his return to form and scoring goals points to the fact he is enjoying his football.

"If Chelsea present a new proposition then we will study it and after that he will make a decision on his future.

"It was important for him to return to his best level, without bad injuries, and he has shown he's one of the best players in Europe.

"A lot of big clubs in Europe have asked about him but we will not make any decision until the end of the season."

Much will depend, though, on Chelsea's choice of a permanent manager to replace Hiddink, as the Dutchman insists he will not be staying at Stamford Bridge once the season has ended.

Hiddink is determined to lead Russia to the 2010 World Cup finals and Chelsea cannot afford to wait until the qualification period is over in November.

The Dutch coach has a clause in his contract that allows him to walk away from the post if they fail to reach the finals.

But Hiddink, currently back in Moscow with Russia's national team, said: "A lot of people are trying to persuade me to stay at Chelsea. But I won't change my decision. I'm leaving Chelsea in May."

Chelsea will almost certainly appoint a full-time successor in the summer with Gianfranco Zola and Carlos Ancelotti among the favourites.

Maradona Hand of God

The countdown is on to Diego Maradona's first competitive game in charge of Argentina.

His team's form in warm-up friendies has been impressive - a 1-0 win away to Scotland and especially a 2-0 win away to France. But that will quickly be forgotten if Maradona is unable to steer his side confidently through World Cup qualification.

On Saturday Argentina are at home to Venezuela. On paper, at least, it looks like a comfortable start.

But then the ante is upped - 3,600 metres above sea level to La Paz, where Argentina travel to take on Bolivia on the following Wednesday. It's a trip that no team likes to take - and after that Argentina's remaining away games take them to Ecuador, Paraguay and Uruguay, all very difficult venues. With Brazil still to visit Buenos Aires, Argentina's place in South Africa next year is far from guaranteed. There is no doubt about it - in his new post Maradona is putting his prestige on the line.

He is by no means the first to do so with Argentina. Some of the great names of the country's glorious footballing tradition have had a go at coaching the national team, often with disappointing results.

One of the greatest of them all was perhaps the most disappointing. Adolfo Pedernera was one of the outstanding products of the golden age of Argentine football, the 1940s. Known as 'the Napoleon of football' for his strategic brilliance on the field, as a coach he took Colombia to their first World Cup in 1962. But he was unable to repeat the trick with Argentina - he was in charge when they failed to qualify for Mexico '70.

Pedernera's time in charge came when Argentina's national team was going through a confusing phase, which lasted between 1958 and '74. During this period Argentina had an extraordinary 17 different coaches plus one triumvirate. Several, like Pedernera, were veritable legends of the Argentine game. And yet the results rarely met the expectations.

The two poles of this period are highly significant; 1958 was when Argentina had a cruel encounter with reality; 1974 was when they appointed a coach who would find a way to cope with it. That 1940s golden age in Argentina ended with a players strike that forced some of the top stars abroad, especially to Colombia, where, among many others, Pedernera and Di Stefano went to further their careers. This forced the national team into isolation. Argentina refused to enter the World Cups of 1950 or 54, and stayed out of the Copa Americas of 1949 and 53. They were soon back, winning in both 55 and 57, but Italian clubs then swooped on their top players - which at that time meant that they were no longer picked by Argentina. Sivori, Maschio and Angelillo all ended up playing for Italy.

So when they came over to Sweden for the 1958 World Cup they were stepping into the unknown with an understrength team. They had little notion that in the previous decade they had fallen behind, especially in physical terms. Losing 3-1 to West Germany and 6-1 to Czechoslovakia came as a real shock, and brought it home that they were miles off the pace. How to deal with the rise of northern European football and the physical challenge that it represented - this was a question that hung over the Argentina team for years.

The 1974 World Cup showed them no closer to finding an answer. Like neighbours Uruguay and Brazil, they found their game rendered obsolete by the total football of the Dutch, who put so much pressure on the ball that the South Americans found it impossible to play at their normal rhythm. Holland beat Argentina 4-0.

Enter Cesar Luis Menotti, the chain-smoking philosophising coach who changed the national team for ever. For a start, he got it organised, and using the carrot of staging the 1978 World Cup, he worked to make it a priority rather than a battleground for petty disputes between the major clubs.

Secondly, he made it a truly national affair, rather than a team that only represented Buenos Aires. Thirdly, he had a clear idea of how his team should play. Traditional Argentine passing football could beat the Europeans, argued Menotti - but they had to up the rhythm of their play.

This was the importance of Ossie Ardiles. Going into the 1978 World Cup Ardiles was by no means the fans favourite - many would have preferred to see a player from River Plate, rather than Huracan, in the heart of the midfield. But with his fetching and carrying, his give and goes, Ardiles brought tempo to the team - and well before the end of the 1978 World Cup he had won the public over.

Argentina's victory in that tournament is one of the more controversial in Wold Cup history. Two years into Menotti's reign the country suffered a coup and a barbaric military dictatorship took over, supposedly defending 'Christian' values by torturing dissidents and throwing them out of aeroplanes.

A man of the left, Menotti abhorred them, and saw his team as standing for genuine Argentine working class values. Thinking of the explosion of patriotism victory would bring, the dictatorship wanted him to win, and rumours of dirty tricks have hung around the tournament. It may be the case that without home advantage Argentina would not have triumphed in 1978. But whatever the truth about dirty tricks, in purely footballing terms something significant happened there.

That win launched Argentina on to the top table of world footballing nations, where they had not been for some time. And even when they have disappointed, such as in 2002, they have sat there ever since. This is the tradition that Diego Maradona inherits. As a player he is part of the greatness of the Argentina national team, just as Pedernera was in the 40s. Will he have a different fate as coach?

United still European favourites

Rafael Benitez maintains that holders Manchester United are now favourites to retain the Champions League crown.

The Liverpool boss was reacting to Friday's quarter-final draw which has paired the Anfield club with Chelsea for the fifth season on the trot in this competition.

If Liverpool get past that battle, they must play Barcelona or Bayern Munich in the semi-finals for the right to take part in the Rome final on May 27.

Manchester United will play Porto in the quarter-finals and if they are successful they would play the winners of the Arsenal v Villarreal tie in the last four.

Benitez said: "Manchester United must now be favourites - they have an easier draw than us."

"Our half of the draw is the more difficult now after this draw."

But Benitez was pleased the prospect of Liverpool having to play on the 20th anniversary of the Hillsborough disaster was now gone.

"Obviously we did not want to do that and with the second leg of our quarter-final now scheduled for London on the 14th (April), our wishes have been agreed with," he said.

"Hopefully it won't make a difference to us that the second leg is away.

"We have to think about the first game at Anfield with our fans behind us and look to get a positive result to take to Stamford Bridge.

"We need to make sure we don't make a mistake in the first leg like we did in last year's semi-final.

"They will be two tough games but we are playing well and clearly we are confident we can win."

Last season's semi-final first leg between the two sides featured an injury-time own goal from John Arne Riise which ultimately proved decisive.

Benitez had hoped to avoid an English side, but he added: "At this stage of the competition, you know you'll play against a good team. Chelsea are a very good team.

"We know each other very well and this is an exciting draw. We knew it would be difficult to avoid an English team but we need to approach the two games with confidence.

"We have done the double over them this season in the league but clearly these two games in the quarter-finals will be different."

Barcelona

Barcelona demolished Malaga 6-0 at the Nou Camp with an irresistible display of attacking football that re-established their six-point lead at the top of the Primera Liga on Sunday.

Samuel Eto'o scored twice, taking his league tally for the season to 25, while Xavi, Thierry Henry, Daniel Alves and Lionel Messi weighed in with one apiece against their overly cautious visitors.

The leaders have 69 points with 10 matches left to play, six ahead of chasing Real Madrid, who were earlier led to a 3-0 victory at home to Almeria by two-goal Klaas Jan Huntelaar.

Barca midfielder Xavi burst through on to Eto'o's pass to open the scoring after 19 minutes and Messi beat three men with a dash off the right flank to net high at the near post in the 25th.

Xavi fed Henry to round the goalkeeper and then Eto'o to make it 4-0 before the break but the hosts did not ease off.

Andres Iniesta floated a pass into the area for Alves to loop a header over a stranded Inaki Goitia in the 51st and, soon after, Henry unselfishly squared for Eto'o to grab his second.

At the Bernabeu, Marcelo opened the scoring for Real with a thunderous strike after 24 minutes but his team failed to spark until after the break.

Dutchman Huntelaar volleyed a poor defensive clearance high into the net after 53 minutes, and sealed the side's 12th league win in 13 from a loose ball, after Arjen Robben's run and shot was blocked.

Sevilla are third with 54 points and Villarreal fourth with 48 after both won their home matches on Saturday.

Ten-man Valencia won their first game since the beginning of February when Juan Mata netted late on for a 1-0 victory at Racing Santander.

Unai Emery's side had had defender Alexis sent off at the start of the second half and survived a last-minute penalty from Racing which Oscar Serrano blasted against the crossbar.

Valencia are sixth with 43 points behind Atletico Madrid on goal difference, with Atletico visiting Real Mallorca in Sunday's late game.

At the foot of the table, Javad Nekounam's last-minute header gave Osasuna a 1-0 home win over Espanyol that moved them up to 17th on 29 points, pushing Mallorca into the bottom three on goal difference.

Numancia, who beat Sporting Gijon 2-1 at home are 19th with 26 points, four ahead of Espanyol.

Daniel Alves rubbishes Move to Chelsea

Barcelona defender Daniel Alves has denied he has any interest in a move to Chelsea after a British newspaper claimed he was eager to join the club in the summer.
Since moving to the Nou Camp, Alves has carved out a reputation as one of the best attacking right-backs in the world.

But the player, who came close to moving to Stamford Bridge two years ago, has now come out and issued a statement denying any interest in a move to the Premier League club.

Alves has three years left on a contract which includes a release clause of 90 million euros. The Daily Mirror suggested Chelsea may be willing to pay £27m but that seems unlikely to tempt one of their European rivals to part with a crucial player.

The 25-year-old former Sevilla wing-back is also said to be interesting Manchester City, who are linked with just about every player of note in world football.

Alves' media representatives released a statement claiming the 25-year-old right-back intends to see out the remainder of his contract at the Nou Camp and denied an article published in the Daily Mirror newspaper in which sources close to the player revealed he wishes to move to London.

"Daniel Alves knows about the interest of the London club today through the article in the ... tabloid,'' the statement read. "A denial is important in order to not give the wrong impression on this matter.''

Chelsea's interest seems doubtful considering the impressive debut season from Portugal international Jose Bosingwa.

Serie A

Juventus moved back to within four points of Serie A leaders Inter Milan with a comprehensive 4-1 victory away to Roma tonight.

Vincenzo Iaquinta scored twice with Olof Mellberg and Pavel Nedved also on target for Claudio Ranieri's side, who showed no mercy for a depleted Roma side.

Roma's consolation came from Simone Loria, who responded to the first of Iaquinta's goals to bring the home side level three minutes into the second half, but there was no way back after Iaquinta grabbed his and Juve's second in the 55th minute.

League leaders Inter host Reggina tomorrow and can restore their seven-point lead at the top of the table with a win while Roma can slip five points behind fourth place if either Genoa or Fiorentina win tomorrow.

Roma were without 11 members of their first-team squad due to injury and suspension, leaving coach Luciano Spalletti with a battle on his hand just to get 11 fit players on the pitch.

He succeeded, but that was the only victory he was able to celebrate on a torrid night at the Stadio Olimpico.

It could have started perfectly for the Giallorossi had John Arne Riise's first-minute volley finished inside of the post.

Minutes later, the home side had another good chance with Riise chasing down a ball which Zdenek Grygera had left to go out for a goal kick. The Roma full-back reached the ball and pulled it back to Jeremy Menez, but Giorgio Chiellini threw himself in front of the Frenchman's shot.

Juve went ahead in the 34th minute with a fine team move which started with a determined tackle from Cristian Molinaro deep in his own half.

He sent Christian Poulsen on his way and the Dane exchanged passes with Sebastian Giovinco, who in turn played the ball into the path of Iaquinta, who shifted into the penalty area onto his preferred right foot before unleashing an unstoppable shot into the far corner past Doni.

Roma got the start they needed to the second half with an equaliser coming after less than three minutes.

Menez's low corner from the left made its way through a crowd of players to Loria, who swivelled to place his left-footed shot into the bottom corner of Gianluigi Buffon's goal.

Juve were back in front in the 55th minute as Iaquinta grabbed his second of the night.

Grygera's cross deflected up off Riise to the Juve striker, who beat Philippe Mexes to the ball and nodded it past Doni from five yards.

Seven minutes later Juve should have added a third, but they squandered the chance, despite having four men up against two Roma defenders.

Alessandro del Piero put Iaquinta through, but he could not get a shot in this time as the ball squirmed loose back to Del Piero, whose shot was saved on the line by Riise.

Mellberg did add a third in the 68th minute when he rose to meet Del Piero's corner with a determined header into the top corner of Doni's goal.

Nedved completed the scoring just minutes after coming on to replace Tiago with a fine volley from 20 yards which, again, left Doni no chance in the Roma goal as he picked the ball out of the back of his net for the fourth and last time in the 74th minute.

In Saturday's other game Catania beat Lazio 1-0 thanks to a Michele Paolucci goal. Goran Pandev missed a penalty for Lazio.

Anti-Doping Regulations

The sports court of the German Football Association (DFB) has fined TSG 1899 Hoffenheim and the Bundesliga club's doping official Peter Geigle for violating the DFB's anti-doping regulations.

Regulation violation
The court handed down a €75,000 fine to the club while Peter Geigle was fined €2,500. Hoffenheim players Andreas Ibertsberger and Christoph Janker had been cleared of any wrongdoing on 6 March after coming late to a doping test following the 7 February domestic match against VfL Borussia Mönchengladbach. The DFB court did not consider the case against Ibertsberger and Janker at its session on Monday 16 March. Both players were cleared, as the court considered that they had not been informed that they had been drawn for a doping control, and therefore did not violate any rule. The violation of rule was committed by the doping official of the club, who did not inform the players that they had been drawn for a doping control. "The evidence showed that this concrete case was not a classical doping offence," said Hans E Lorenz, chairman of the DFB court, of the ruling. "It was more a case of regulation violation of the DFB's anti-doping rules."

UEFA Grassroots Workshop up and running

The 8th UEFA Grassroots Workshop has kicked off in Hamburg as a packed three-day schedule got under way with the opening ceremony followed by a wide variety of presentations, a practical session and an update on grassroots news from around Europe.

Warm welcome
The workshop was opened by UEFA technical director Andy Roxburgh, who passed the floor to Gerhard Mayer-Vorfelder, UEFA vice-president, to welcome the attendees. In a far-reaching speech, Mayer-Vorfelder emphasised the importance of grassroots football, saying: "Professional football and grassroots football are two sides of the same coin." German Football Association (DFB) president Dr Theo Zwanziger then added his own words of welcome, outlining the importance of the event – "Grassroots is an important challenge, not only for sport but for society in general, and any exchange of ideas can only be beneficial" – sentiments that were echoed by Hamburg sports senator Dr Karin von Welck.

Development issues
The first presentation of the workshop was entitled 'Child's play: development issues', with Roxburgh taking the group through some of the key challenges facing grassroots football and offering specific thoughts on children's football. His presentation spanned matters such as phases of development, games, methods, leadership, influences, fairness, aims, safety, participation and potential, reminding his audience that they should remember at all times: "You don't coach football, but youngsters who play football."

German example
The morning session concluded by focusing, appropriately, on Germany – with a presentation on the 2011 FIFA Women's World Cup and the implementation of a legacy concept for children from Steffi Jones, the much-decorated former international who is president of the local organising committee for the tournament. DFB director Willi Hink also gave a talk – Children's Football in Germany – which covered the association's statute and development plan, how they propose to develop as the demographic make-up of Germany's population changes, and their future strategies and measures.

Practical session
The first part of the afternoon was taken up with a practical session at the Arena Hamburg, home of Hamburger SV, looking at age-appropriate training and using the club's Under-12 children to run through a wide-ranging series of drills. Divided into two parts, the first half of the session was conducted by Dieter Schrader, from the regional association of Lower Saxony, who gave an example of the sort of training provided by the DFB Mobil, the association's football van which travels around the country supplying coaches and materials for children. Hamburg U12 coach Pit Reimers then put on a session showing best practice for age-appropriate training.

Grassroots news
Day one was brought to a close with a round-up of grassroots football news, with two presentations highlighting issues in different countries across Europe. Kelly Simmons – national game manager at the Football Association – talked about increasing girls' participation using the English example, making particular reference to the FA Women's Football Strategy 2008-2012, before Anders Levinsen, leader of Cross Cultures, delivered an update on the Fun Football project. A lively discussion followed involving German legends Uwe Seeler and Hansi Müller, entitled 'Learning to play football', with the latter explaining: "You don't just have to have talent, but something more – diligence or obsessiveness – and that makes the difference."

Iconic 'Finale Rome' set for ultimate stage

adidas has unveiled the official match ball for the UEFA Champions League final at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome on 27 May – the adidas Finale Rome.

Roman values
The design of the adidas Finale Rome is based on the widely recognisable UEFA Champions League starball. The colours of the new match ball are inspired by the traditional Roman colour burgundy with gold detailing around the stars. Mosaic figures representing key sporting and Roman values such as speed, teamwork, justice and power are featured in each star – honouring European club football's blue-riband event.

Sophistication
Like the EUROPASS, the match ball of UEFA EURO 2008™ in Austria and Switzerland last summer, the adidas Finale Rome boasts the innovative surface structure PSC-Texture™. This surface structure allows players to control and direct the ball perfectly in all weather conditions. The PSC-Texture™ consists of a sophisticated and extremely fine structure on the ball's outer skin that guarantees optimum grip between ball and boot. Due to the usage of this material, the ball texture feels like goose bumps. In addition, like the EUROPASS, the adidas Finale Rome is constructed out of 14 panels using revolutionary Thermal Bonding Technology.

'Historic'
At a press conference at Terrazza Colle Oppio in Rome – an open balcony with a wonderful view of the Colosseum in the background – participants sang the praises of the ball to be used for the final. "We thank the FIGC [Italian Football Federation], the Italian Olympic Committee [CONI], the municipality of the city and adidas," said Peter Willems, UEFA head of marketing activities. "Rome is a historic venue and we hope to watch a historic final here. The ball is an icon of this tournament. The starball was introduced in 2000 for the finals and has been used for all matches of the competition since the 2006/07 season. It is the best of the best on the ultimate stage – the ball with the highest level of technology."

'Important partnership'
"I want to stress the importance of the partnership between adidas and UEFA," added Winand Krawinkel, marketing director of adidas Italy. "We have been producing balls for the most important football events in Europe and in the world since 1970. UEFA gave us the incentive to make many important steps in technology." The adidas Finale Rome is currently available at retail outlets worldwide. adidas has been making footballs since 1963, and has supplied the official match balls to all major UEFA and FIFA tournaments since 1970.

Juventus Hit Back

Juventus recovered from a goal down to defeat Serie A strugglers Bologna FC 4-1 and reduce FC Internazionale Milano's lead at the top to four points on a day when Genoa CFC boosted their hopes of a top-four finish.

Del Piero double
Bologna took the lead midway through the first half when a defence-splitting pass by Serie A's leading scorer Marco Di Vaio sent Massimo Mutarelli through on goal and the former S.S. Lazio midfielder placed a shot between the legs of Gianluigi Buffon. The Bianconeri responded and after Sebastian Giovinco tested Bologna goalkeeper Francesco Antonioli, Hasan Salihamidžić (47) headed in the former's corner. Giovinco put the hosts in front 19 minutes from time after receiving a pass from Vincenzo Iaquinta, and four minutes later Alessandro Del Piero controlled a ball in the box, turned and sent Antonioli the wrong way with his shot. With the visitors down to ten men having lost defender Miguel Ángel Britos to injury when they had already made three substitutions, Del Piero added a fourth with three minutes remaining. Inter host ACF Fiorentina on Sunday evening.

Olivera winner
Earlier on Saturday, Genoa's push for a place in the 2009/10 UEFA Champions League Play-off round gained momentum with a 1-0 victory at ten-man Cagliari Calcio which lifted the Rossoblu into fourth. The Sardinian side had Andrea Cossu sent off six minutes before half-time following a second booking but continued to fashion the better chances, Diego López directing a header against the post moments before the break. Genoa goalkeeper Rubinho then denied Michele Fini and Andrea Lazzari yet it was the visitors who secured all three points when Rubén Olivera headed in a right-wing cross from Raffaele Palladino with six minutes remaining. Fiorentina and AS Roma will go back above Gian Piero Gasperini's team if they win their respective matches on Sunday.

Real Madrid CF

Real Madrid CF shrugged off the disappointment of their heavy defeat in the UEFA Champions League in midweek by overcoming ten-man Athletic Club Bilbao 5-2 in an eventful Liga encounter at San Mamés.

Yeste sent off
Madrid delivered the perfect response to their 4-0 loss at Liverpool FC by going two goals ahead inside 34 minutes. Arjen Robben (22) opened the scoring, cutting inside from the right to finish off a solo run, before Gabriel Heinze headed in a curling free-kick from the Dutch winger. Athletic reduced their arrears when Heinze turned a driven centre from David López into his own net and, despite being reduced to ten men following Yeste's dismissal, they levelled when Iker Casillas fumbled Fernando Llorente's header on to the post and in.

Huntelaar double
The man advantage told after the break, though. Klaas Jan Huntelaar (47, 61) scored his fifth and sixth goals for Los Merengues and five minutes from time Gonzalo Higuaín converted a penalty to cut FC Barcelona's lead at the top to three points ahead of their visit to UD Almería on Sunday.

Late equaliser
Elsewhere on Saturday, Pablo Hernández's 83rd-minute goal rescued a 1-1 draw for Valencia CF against RC Recreativo de Huelva at Mestalla. The visitors went in front when Javier Camuñas opened the scoring ten minutes after the restart and their task was seemingly made easier following the dismissal of Los Ché defender Carlos Marchena (73). However, Hernández, who was introduced as substitute on the hour, equalised although Unai Emery's charges are without a win in six Liga matches and remain eighth.

Old Trafford is not the Giuseppe Meazza

The man sitting beside him, Sir Alex Ferguson, may have described seven-times continental champions AC Milan as "the best European team of all time", but Patrice Evra is confident Manchester United FC will underline the current supremacy of the Premier League over Serie A when they conclude their last-16 contest with FC Internazionale Milano.

English hegemony

The English champions face their Italian counterparts hopeful of claiming a third Serie A scalp in as many seasons following successive quarter-final wins over AS Roma in the two previous campaigns. Although Italian clubs have recorded the most final appearances in the UEFA Champions League era (ten), the Premier League has provided three of the last four finalists and Evra believes the present English hegemony will persist.

'Very confident'
"For me the Premier League is the best football in the world, because you see every year you have four English teams going through in the Champions League," said the French international. "English football is very fast, very strong and now you have lots of European players playing here and the football is more technical and tactical as well. English football has improved a lot and that is why we are very confident for the game tomorrow."

Mixed fortunes

In support of Evra's view, English sides won three two-legged ties against Italian opponents in the 2007/08 UEFA Champions League without shipping a single goal – and, like United, both Arsenal FC and Chelsea FC kept clean sheets in their first-leg ties against Roma and Juventus a fortnight ago. The merits of a goalless draw away from home in Europe are much discussed and in United's case they have had mixed fortunes in their ensuing second legs in the continent's élite competition. Twice away stalemates precipitated home defeats but in the other two instances, United proceeded to win the tie and the trophy, including last term when they beat FC Barcelona 1-0 in the semi-finals.

'Massive game'

Evra reckons United will need to show the same "concentration and spirit" that got them past Barcelona last May, when Paul Scholes's solitary second-leg strike at Old Trafford settled the outcome. "It was a massive game against Barcelona and this is a similar situation," the 27-year-old said. "Now you have the experience but you know every game is different and we need the same concentration and the same spirit. We should be OK tomorrow because we play at home. We drew the first game but that is in the past and the future is tomorrow and we need to win."

First leg: 0 - 0

Man. United 20:45 Internazionale

José Mourinho brings his FC Internazionale Milano team to Old Trafford hoping to engineer a moment to match the career-defining conquest of Manchester United FC that he achieved on his first visit as coach of FC Porto five years ago this week.

Touchline run
"At that time they didn't know who was this crazy manager running down the touchline," said Mourinho, recalling his memorable goal celebration during the 1-1 draw that carried eventual winners Porto past United at this stage of the 2003/04 UEFA Champions League. If anyone is going to sound undaunted by facing a United side unbeaten in 18 European home games it is the Portuguese, not least given he lost just one of ten subsequent encounters with United during his three years at Chelsea FC.

Finely balanced
This tie is balanced after a goalless first leg but Mourinho talked up Inter's prospects of upsetting opponents targeting a tenth quarter-final in 13 seasons: "Zero-zero away from home is not a very good result. It is a result that leaves lots of question marks." Mourinho's prediction of a close contest decided by "little differences" echoed his United counterpart, Sir Alex Ferguson, who admitted: "With a 0-0 draw you are never overconfident because an away goal can be a severe setback to you."

Concentration required
Yet United will draw confidence from having beaten FC Barcelona from this position in last term's semi-finals. "That was the situation when we played Barcelona and what was required was magnificent concentration and focus," said Sir Alex, who played down the significance of his record against Mourinho. "I look at my football club and what it has achieved over the time I have been here. That is more important to me than my record against him."

Defenders return
Sir Alex believes United have undergone a "massive improvement" since their last defeat in the competition, 21 games ago in the 2007 semi-final with AC Milan. "We have far more maturity and understanding of the Champions League," said the Scot, who will bring back Dimitar Berbatov and Cristiano Ronaldo after they sat out Saturday's 4-0 FA Cup win at Fulham FC. While he can also call on defenders Rio Ferdinand and John O'Shea – both fit despite limping off against Fulham – Mourinho must reorganise his back line after Nicolás Burdisso and Marco Materazzi suffered injuries in Saturday's 2-0 victory at Genoa CFC.

Buck the trend
With Cristian Chivu also sidelined, Inter's coach will recall Walter Samuel after a three-match injury absence, and could also hand Patrick Vieira a first start in the competition since Matchday 1. He admitted stopping the hosts' "incredible strikers" will not be easy. "[Sir Alex] has lots of ammunition and is clever in the way he uses it. They are never predictable. You have to read the game and adapt to what they bring." Inter fell at this stage in 2007 and 2008 but the 'Special One' thinks he can buck the trend. "The press have been talking for three weeks about the drama of Inter going out always in the last 16. I prefer to think in a different way, of the possibility of Inter knocking out the world champions. Not even my flu can affect my pleasure."

Lionel Messi The best Young Player

If any player can be said to be the natural successor to Diego Maradona, then surely it must be Lionel Messi.

Born in 1987, he signed for Barcelona from Newell's Old Boys of Argentina at 13 years of age, and since that time Messi has been marked for super stardom. But for a niggling succession of injuries, he surely would have been a Ballon D'Or winner by now.

What has always singled out 'Leo' as being special is his ability to dribble at speed with the ball under perfect control. Although primarily a winger, he can play more central or even deeper but, whatever his position, when he has the ball at his feet, the fans always expect something special from him.
Since scoring his first league goal for Barça in May, 2005 Messi has become a talisman for the team – his modest attitude off the pitch and his constant praising of the work of his team mates ensuring that the fans always hold him in the highest esteem.

Life wasn't always easy for Messi, though, despite his prodigious talent. As a youngster, Lionel suffered from a growth preventing hormonal disorder – Barcelona helped tempt him to Spain by paying for his medical treatment. This short stature, ironically, has enabled Leo to have that low centre of gravity that enables him to weave through defences.

Despite being wooed by the Spanish national team, Messi has always been eager to represent the country of his birth – he was voted player of the tournament in the Under 20 World Cup in 2005, where he was also top goal scorer. In the 2007 Copa America he was voted young player of the tournament. He was not afraid to let it be known how desperate he was to represent Argentina in the 2008 Olympic Games and although Barcelona appeared reluctant at first to release him, he ultimately helped Argentina win the gold medal – creating the only goal of the final in the process.

Playing for the national team hasn't brought constant success, however. On his international debut, against Hungary in 2005, Messi came on as substitute in the second half and was sent off 40 seconds later – allegedly elbowing the defender who was tugging his shirt to hold him back. Then, in the 2006 World Cup, Pekerman, the coach, was the subject of immense criticism from fans because of his seeming reluctance to play Messi in what was, for the Argentines, a disappointing tournament.

And those Maradona comparisons? Well, the great man himself did say at one point that Messi was his natural heir. And if you want to see a carbon copy of the 'hand of God' goal then search on You Tube for Messi's 'goal' in June, 2007 – against Espanyol in a local derby, would you believe!

While you're there, though, remind yourself as well of the goal against Getafe in the Copa del Rey, when the little maestro picked the ball up and ran through just about the whole team to round the keeper and score. If that doesn't bring back memories of Maradona then nothing will.

Despite the comparisons, Lionel Messi isn't the second Maradona. A modest, cool-headed, softly-spoken personality, Lionel Messi never seems to find himself in the gossip columns. Instead, he just gets on with the job of trying to be as good a footballer as he can be: and that is as good as any forward player in the world game.

Lionel Messi is a great player in his own right. And he can only get better.

The Best Aerobics Shoes

Aerobic exercise, while great for building your cardiovascular system, can be hard on your feet. Aerobic activities consist of quick lateral movements with lots of jumping and leaping which can have a very negative impact on your feet if you are not wearing the right shoes. Wearing the proper shoes will make your workout more effective with less irritation and discomfort. The right shoes will help you enjoy the activity and be more willing to stick with the program for maximum results.

So, how do decide on the right shoes? The first thing to remember is that all shoes are not created equal. Shoes designed for one exercise activity do not always offer the best support for a different activity. Running shoes, for example, are designed to provide stability in forward motion. If you try to do sideways aerobics movements in running shoes, you can wind up tripping over your own feet! It is recommended that you buy a pair of aerobic shoes and only wear them for aerobic activities. Although they can be expensive, shoes that are used only for aerobics and not worn as ever day shoes will last a long, long time. Also, when considering an exercise shoe, name brand shoes are usually worth the difference in price. They will offer more support and last longer than cheap generic shoes.

Aerobic shoes should be well fitted. Go shoe shopping in the afternoon when your feet are at their largest. Make sure to wear the same kind of socks that you will wear when exercising as the socks thickness will determine the fit of the shoe. Go to a reputable shoe store for fitting, you need to know what kind of shoe you need. You can always look for those shoes on sale later but you must know the right shoe to look for. Take an old pair of shoes with you, the wear and tear on an old pair of shoes will help the sales rep determine your foot and step type. You may need to shop several stores before finding a knowledgeable sales rep. Beware of the shoe rep that tries to sell you shoes without first considering your foot type.

Aerobic shoes should provide superior Shock absorption and cushioning. The pressure you place on your feet while doing aerobics is many times greater than when your walking. Impact forces from aerobics can reach up to six times the force of gravity. This impact is transmitted to each of the 26 bones in the foot. Because of the many side-to-side motions used in aerobics, shoes need an arch design that will counteract these movements.

It takes a little time to find a pair of quality aerobics shoes that fit your individual needs and tastes. However, a little time spent right in the beginning will help prevent losing a lot of time due to injury.

UEFA Champions League – Chelsea 2:0 Werder Bremen

Jose Mourinho these days is a man under pressure.

Following two fruitless years in Europe the Chelsea boss knows it is the Champions League that club owner Roman Abramovich craves the most.

Failure to deliver in this year’s competition could prove fatal for the ‘Special One’.

The start of this season has seen a somewhat more humble Mourinho, gone for the moment the brash arrogance that has accompanied the man ever since his arrival fresh from guiding Porto to Champions League glory.

Watching him interviewed in recent weeks I get the impression that his failure to dominate Europe despite the biggest budget in world football has brought the Portugeezer back down to earth a little.

Maybe the realisation has dawned upon him that he is not quite as good as he thinks he is and that he is only human after all.

The game itself was a cagey affair, exploding into life when Michael Essien pounced on a German defensive error and stroked the ball past the goalkeeper and into the net.

Werder Bremen had their moments, the nearest being Klose’s header that beat Petr Cech but cannoned back off the crossbar.

The game was made safe with twenty minutes remaining after Didier Drogba was bundled over in the penalty area.

Normal spot-kick man Frank Lampard stepped aside, instead handing the ball to German midfield maestro Michael Ballack who duly proceeded to smash the ball into the net.

The power and accuracy of the German’s finish suggested Lampard may well have handed over the spot-kick duties for good.

Lampard hit a great shot with just ten minutes remaining but was unfortunate to see his effort crash back off the inside of the post.

Despite a low par performance Chelsea will be grateful for the three points which puts them level at the top of the group with last year's champions Barcelona.

Champions Trophy

The ICC Champions Trophy tournament currently underway in India has so far seen over seventeen matches played. The competing teams Australia, West Indies, England and India are in Group ‘A’ while Pakistan, South Africa, New Zealand and Sri Lanka in Group ‘B.’ So far the tournament has generated many upsets with the unusually slow pitches leading the way. Low scoring and the dew factor are causing much concern to all the teams participating.

The major upset had been the rejuvenation of West Indies who are currently plying to their best form. Sri Lanka expected to do better have fallen short due to poor batting performance by its top order batsmen. Most of them did not click at the right time. For Sri Lanka the only redeeming factor was their good showing in the match against New Zealand at Barbourne Stadium in Mumbai on Friday. When New Zealand skipper Stephen Fleming was asked about the poor performance against Sri Lanka he said that poor batting was a mixture of ‘the mindset’ not making right decisions, of players still finding their bearings on their return to international cricket were the reasons for the debacle. He thought the injury to Scott Styris (soreness) was a blow, because he is among the better players of spin. In that fixture it was déjà vu for Man of the Match Mutate Muralitharan when asked two interesting questions. The first question related to the magical wicket of Jacob Oram whom was bowled behind his legs by the ‘Murali Doosra.’ When Mualitharan was asked whether he remembered such dismissals in the past, he replied “There have been quite a few like that.” The second question related to bowling on glued pitches. Here too Murali said “I have bowled on such pitches when playing county cricket for Lancashire. They would be glued so that the pitch didn’t turn dusty from over use.” Asked if this gluing was not fair to the spinners, Murali was sporting enough to say “If they want a good game they should use the technology.” However, New Zealand won their matches against Pakistan and South Africa to confirm their Semi Final berth. For the Sri Lankans it was flight back home and to prepare for their tour of New Zealand later this year.

The South Africans on Friday dealt a crushing blow on the Pakistanis to confirm their place in the Semi Finals. Makhaya Nitini grabbed five wickets for a paltry 21 runs to register a emphatic 124 runs victory against the Pakistanis. The Proteas started the innings disastrously and at one stage were placed at 42 for 5 wickets but recovered to end of the allotted 50 overs posting 213 for 8. Pakistan chasing this total slipped to 42 for 7 wickets and never recovered, only to be bowled out for 89 in 25 overs.

Defending Champions West Indies have already qualified from Group A to be in the Semi Finals. Australia and hosts India will battle it out for the next available berth on Sunday 29th October. In the Group B, South Africa and New Zealand have confirmed their places in the Semi Finals.

Arsenal Barren Because of Psychological Factors

Arsenal increasingly feel the day the loss of sharpness. Series results in the opposite party Fulham shed the state that "The Gunners" have a problem at all.

Results in the series without a touchdown Emirates Stadium, Saturday (28 / 2) nights, is the worst result since the last 16 years. "The Gunners" have now recorded four times the series without a goal and as the repetition in 1993.

"I feel weak in our attacks, and survive today, but we must continue to fight," commented coach Arsen Wenger is quoted in an interview that the club site. "They move more, but then we slowly overcome."

Wenger even explicitly acknowledge that the front line of dull. One of the psychological problems it is the players. Unfortunately, he still does not find its own answers to complete the problem.
